Rightwing, Authoritarian and Populist Nationalisms: Racisms, Gender and the (Re-)production of the Nation

This session invites submissions exploring the rise of rightwing, authoritarian and populist nationalisms in different geographical and socio-political contexts. The recent surge of populist, far-right, and authoritarian regimes across the world has also reinforced old and new racisms. The panel invites papers which explore how these new racisms articulate a vision of the ideal nation and how this intersects with gendered politics. We particularly welcome contributions that address how different forms of nationalism and racism articulate with the cultural and social reproduction of the nation.

  • Theoretical/conceptual approaches
  • Empirical studies
  • Articulations of gendered racialized nationalisms
  • Resistance and contestations
