Session Type: Oral
This session explores theoretical, and/or empirical, work on the diversity in contemporary migrant (non)adaptation. The emphasis is on showing how the multiplicity in and complexity of the characteristics of migrant groups, as well as the places to which the migrants moved, explain this diversity in (non)adaptation. For instance, the migration landscape in 21st century Britain can be characterized by ‘super-diversity’ (Vertovec 2007). ‘Super-diversity’ includes the multi-dimensionality in, and intersections of, various characteristics pertaining to the migrants’ self-perceptions, ethnic identifications, modes of belonging, group formation, and social status. Presently, many groups of migrants have become less internally homogenous, and externally distinct. By referring to these broader themes, this session invites papers that study the increasing diversification in contemporary migrant (non)adaptation. The emphasis is on the socialities of migrants. Further important themes are: Porous group boundaries, salience of social categories explaining the exclusion of migrants, and new alliances of migrants promoting (partial) inclusion.
