This panel will discuss Brazilian Political Culture both in a historical and contemporary perspective. Since its return to democracy and the adoption of the 1988 Constitution, Brazil has undergone institutional changes and political challenges. Using the different waves of the World Values Survey carried out in Brazil since 1990, we aim to reflect on the kind of political values that have influenced the evolution of Brazilian Democracy and Society. What kind of Democracy are we discussing? How Brazilian citizens evaluate their democracy, institutions, and society? How do they participate in politics? What lessons can we learn from the past to assess the current political moment? Currently, Brazilian Democracy faces the rise of populism, anti-immigration discourse and a more important presence of religion in politics. In that sense, we invite for papers reflecting on these various subjects (Political Culture and values in historical perspective, Democratic Brazilian Values, Citizens’ participation in politics, politics and religions, attitudes towards migration, Brazil and populism, etc.).
