Session Type: Oral

Leaving former concepts of professionalism behind, which were just canvassing the formal shape of a professional group, has been an important advancement to the sociology of professions debate. But with regard to the structural changes in the field of professional groups the aspect of collective action and mobilization, social closure and occupational politics need to be taken into perspective again. Professions are anything but a homogenous bloc but oftentimes a quite heterogeneous field. Professions combine different types of closure to improve and defend their status. If societies transform, democracies are tested, welfare states transform professions have to develop a strategy to deal with and to drive change. Therefore the session invites papers which address collective action and the organizing of professional groups and in how far professional politics relates to contemporary challenges of professional groups.
