The topic of social exclusion in old age is attracting attention amongst sociologists of aging based in Europe even if it has yet to be on the radar of sociologists of aging in other parts of the world. Part of the reason why European social gerontologists have begun to theorize around old age social exclusion is related to the fact that “the notion of social exclusion has found its way into the lexicon of all major global governance institutions /and/ has become something of a trope around which is pegged justifications for various reforms” (O’Brien & Penna 2008: 1). In 2016 the European COST-funding organization gave funding to a research network called ROSEnet (Reducing Old Age Social Exclusion: Collaborations in Research & Policy), which brings together 140+ researchers who are working on old age social exclusion. This network is mapping out what social exclusion in later life entails, and identifying ways we can use to tackle this. Among others, scholars involved in this network have identified the domains of social exclusion that are the most relevant to old age social exclusion (i.e. neighborhood and community; services; amenities and mobility; social relations; material and financial resources; socio-cultural aspects and civic participation; Walsh et al. 2017).

We encourages scholars to present research of relevance to old age social exclusion. This session hopes to bring to fore the complexities that the use of the social exclusion lens expose, to continue pondering on what this lens offers to social gerontological research, policy and practice.
