Studies on the relationship between rational choice and social capital contribute to the advancement of the two research fields. An interesting phenomenon, for example, is entrepreneurs’ creation of social capital. They intentionally create social capital for their business (Burt 2007). However, if all of them try to create social capital to maximize their own profits, they may end up at a lower level of social capital than they expected. This is because their choices of social ties with other entrepreneurs depend on choices of other entrepreneurs and, therefore, they become trapped in deadlock in some cases. In other words, rational choices of entrepreneurs produce irrational results like social dilemma. Another interesting relationship between rational choice and social capital is that social capital created by rational choice of people becomes constraints on them. For example, social capital rationally created by business partners for their benefits may limit their freedom of business decision and they miss opportunities to get higher benefits. Not being restricted to these phenomena, this session welcomes papers studying the relationship between rational choice and social capital.
