Infância Falada – Histories of transformation based on dialogue

Directed by Hermílio Santos and Kamila Almeida (Brazil, 52’, 2016)

This documentary, “Talked Childhood”, is the result of a research on “Childhood and Violence: Everyday life of small children in Favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Recife and São Paulo”, coordinated by Hermílio Santos. With the support of the Bernard van Leer Foundation, they aim to provide more precise data regarding violence suffered by children in impoverished communities in Brazil. The results are being used in projects by local governments and social organizations to improve the living conditions of small children. The film presents positive experiences of fostering dialogue among children as an alternative to violence, providing an optimistic scenario of resistance.

Challenges of Contemporary Brazil

Video series in 6 episodes, general direction by Hermílio Santos, 2021

In this series, social scientists of the IV ISA Forum Local Organizing Committee (LOC) show some of the challenges of today’s Brazilian society.

The 6 episodes recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília address the vitality and resilience of the Brazilian civil society during the pandemic, particularly in favelas; the pervasive racism and patriarchalism in the Brazilian labor market, and how Bolsonaro government policies is threatening the survival of indigenous people and the environment.

Produced by Conta Pra Mim Filmes under the direction of Hermílio Santos, filmmaker and Chair of the IV ISA Forum LOC, with funding from the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel.
