Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires from a sample size of 408, determined using Cochran’s formula, while qualitative insights were gathered from ten Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and twelve Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The findings revealed that traditional aphrodisiacs are widely known and used among married women in Kaduna State, usage is frequent, driven by cultural beliefs, affordability and ease of access and is primarily motivated by a desire to enhance sexual satisfaction, maintain marital harmony and meet partners’ expectations. Socially, the use of kayan mata has been perceived as a means of empowerment for women, fostering self-confidence and control in intimate relationships. Economically, while it provides some women with financial independence, it can also strain household finances. Health implications were mixed; most respondents considered kayan mata to be generally safe, although concerns about potential health risks, particularly during pregnancy, were noted. The study concludes that there is a critical need for sensitization programs to educate the public about the safe and responsible use of traditional aphrodisiacs. It recommends that health authorities and community leaders need to collaborate to establish guidelines for regulating the production, distribution, sale and consumption of kayan mata to ensure quality control and safeguard public health.
