Internally Displaced Persons and Their Life Circumstances in Ukrainian Society during the Wartime in 2022-2024
The group of internally displaced persons which is continuing to grow and deform in Ukraine, since the start of the localized war at the East of Ukraine and Crimea peninsula occupation in 2014 is counting up to 5 million people in different data sources. This group is very dynamic and represents the part of the population which is the most affected by the war, with the significant physical, material and psychological consequences, which we are going to describe based on data from our survey. Within the fellowship of the British Academy and with the support of the University of East Anglia we have collected 356 responses in August 2023 from Ukrainian families, one of the target groups being IDPs *.
According to the results, the IDPs are the most economically vulnerable and not protected enough by the state group, which is reporting also about the family problems - such as loss of trust between the partners, low level of satisfaction with their family life, and crucial changes in family compositions - which is resulting in new challenges, especially referring childcare and distribution of family functions. The weak positions of the IDP family groups in the society are causing the disbalanced social equilibrium in the places where the IDPs are mostly concentrated - Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kyiv and Lviv regions of Ukraine.
* this survey is a part of a 3-stages research project ´Changing identities and social roles in Ukrainian families in 2022-2024`
