The LGBT community in Ghana faces significant violence and discrimination due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. Many LGBT+ individuals in Ghana prefer to speak to trusted advocates and report their cases to LGBT organizations or human rights organizations. However, obtaining scientific data on these challenges is difficult due to the lack of coordination in reporting methods. This study gathered national data on the challenges faced by the LGBT community in Ghana - violence, human rights abuses, stigma, and discrimination. The study involved 516 respondents, with 48% of them identifying as men, 30% as women, 9% as trans-men, and 10% as transwomen. The majority of respondents identified cultural and religious beliefs as the main reasons for SGBV. The study found that most LGBT persons do not report violence due to fear of stigma, discrimination, lack of proper redress systems, lack of education on human rights, fear of exposure, and ignorance of appropriate reporting systems or centers.
