The Concept of Zero-Waste Lifestyle with Reference to Vegetarianism in Sanatan Dharma Its Impact on Climate.
Abstract
In an age where environmental consciousness is not just a virtue but a necessity, the question of how individual dietary choices impact the planet is more pertinent than ever. In the pursuit of sustainability, among various lifestyle changes proposed to mitigate environmental damages, the zero-waste lifestyle has been emerging as a pivotal strategy to mitigate environmental pollution and subsequent degradation. Under the Zero Waste Lifestyle, adopting a vegetarian diet is considered as a significant step towards reducing one’s carbon footprint which is deeply rooted in the principles of Sanatan Dharma. This article delves into the veracity of this claim, exploring how ‘Vegetarianism’ and consumption of ‘Satvik food’ potentially lessen environmental degradation, particularly in terms of climate change. In Sanatan Dharma, Satvic food is a diet that is regarded as nourishing and believed to foster mental clarity, happiness and spiritual awareness. The minimally processed plant-based foods inherently reduce food waste, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. The zero-waste lifestyle, with its emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling, complements and aligns with the values and principles of Sanatan Dharma's non-violence (Ahimsa) and "Aparigraha" (non-possessiveness), promoting minimalism and conscious consumption to reduce waste generation at various levels in various forms. Through an examination of ancient sacred texts such as the Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads, and Bhagavad Gita, the research investigates ecological and spiritual rationale for vegetarianism. Overall, the study underscores the intersection of the zero-waste movement and vegetarianism, highlighting their combined impact on mitigating climate change where individuals can make contributions toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient future, bridging spirituality and technological responsibility in the pursuit of holistic well-being.
