Foundation Models and Feminist Futures : Balancing Openness and Control

Foundation models, such as large-scale language models (LLMs), have become pivotal in natural language processing, enabling a wide range of applications. However, the decision to release these models—whether fully open or with restrictions—poses critical questions. In this thought piece, we explore the implications of openness versus proprietary or ‘closed’ foundation models and challenge and present why we argue that foundation models for feminist futures are open to provoke further inclusive discussions about what futures we want.
