What family is considered a large family? What are the characteristics of large families? Why do we distinguish large families from all the families? What makes large families different from other families? The answers to these questions define a large family as a social group.

This paper examines the concept of a large family, as well as demographic and social significance of a large family as a social group. Also, the still existing phenomenon of stigmatization of large families is examined here: how the society perceives a large family, what determines such perception and whether the state's family policy can contribute to this.
