Drawing on my visual ethnographic work in the mixed Palestinian-Jewish of Lydd, Israel, the paper critically examines what Making the City White looks like in an ongoing settler colonial context defined by the Zionist ideology of displace and replace and where racial hierarchy is the norm and the law. The paper addresses the ethnic cleansing of the city’s Palestinians in 1948, urban erasure, the socio-economic and political conditions of those Palestinians who remained, and how the city grapples with being home to undesired communities.
