Critical media and digital literacies are increasingly recognized as essential components in the discourse surrounding globalized media, youth culture, education, and employment. This paper explores the profound impact of globalized and platformized media networks on youth, particularly concerning their health, mental well-being, social engagement, educational outcomes, employability, and social mobility. In an era characterized by rapid media evolution, the role of critical media literacy becomes paramount in equipping young individuals to navigate these shifting landscapes effectively. Employing a cross-sectional approach, this study assesses the resources available and the competencies required for fostering critical media literacy in the Arab world. The findings of previous studies on critical media literacy in MENA reveal significant discrepancies in media literacy levels between monolingual and bilingual speakers within the region, highlighting the need for tailored educational strategies. Furthermore, the research indicates a diminishing influence of traditional sources of guidance—such as family, schools, society, and religious institutions—on the youth in developing countries. This shift underscores the necessity for innovative approaches to media education that resonate with the contemporary experiences of young people. The implications of this study extend beyond academia, providing valuable insights for media, education, public health, and public policy experts who are investigating the effects of media and the internet on populations in the Middle East and North Africa. By emphasizing the importance of critical media literacy, this research aims to contribute to the development of effective educational frameworks that empower youth to engage with media critically and responsibly, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being, societal participation and future prospects.
