Violence and Racism for BLACK Catholic Nuns
Abstract
We propose to address the issue of violence in its connection with racism, and how it can be verified in balck catholic nun, within Catholicism, with a special focus on black women who belong to a congregation. The aim is to reflect on how this genre of life exerts, to a certain extent, violence against the bodies, lives, thoughts, knowledge and actions of black people. The binomial of violence and racism operates and acts in different ways in societies such as Brazil, which has a history crossed by these intersections that goes back to the period of invasion and colonization of this territory by European colonizers, and the forced arrival of a large contingent of people from Africa to be enslaved. Given the breadth and complexity of studying the subject of violence in its relationship with racism, especially in the context of an ancient institution like the Catholic Church, which influences the arts, culture, politics, social relations, among others. These issues are still sensitive due to the institution's racist and colonial history, and silence prevails in its structures. In order to understand these issues, we sought support from the theoretical framework of black feminism, and from other works by Brazilian authors on the subject. In order to achieve the above objective, we will follow the methodology of a bibliographical review. This research is in its early stages, so there are no preliminary results yet. It is hoped that this study will provide updated data on women's religious life, the participation and role of women in the church, black women and the church, as well as providing material on anti-racist action in the Catholic ecclesial milieu.
