Within the discourse of social movements, intersectionality is viewed as an important, complex and multifaceted concept, serving both as an analytical tool and a theoretical lens. However, its application is often constrained by an over-reliance on US-centric case studies in social movement research. This session calls for scholarly contributions that showcase the varied implementations of intersectionality across a global landscape. Possible areas of focus include frames and slogans; conscious raising of participants’ identity as a tool for mobilization; practical strategies of intervention that involves a deep awareness of intersectional positionality and bargaining of protest goals in a way that optimizes outcomes. Papers should highlight the nuanced, intricate, and fluid nature of intersectionality in social movements. Furthermore, we invite studies that examine how counter-movements interact with intersectionality, either embracing or opposing it, to advance their goals. Submissions that contribute to theoretical and/or empirical research are encouraged.
