New Directions in Environmental Sociology

Tuesday, 8 July 2025: 11:00-12:45
Location: SJES031 (Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences (JES))
RC24 Environment and Society (host committee)

Language: English

Environmental sociology has come a long way from binary debates pitting constructivism against materialism, ecological modernization versus political economy, and European versus North American traditions. Environmental justice, feminist and post-colonial theory have all left their mark, as have scholars bringing Indigenous, Southern, Blak/Black, and other perspectives. What does a more cosmopolitan and diverse future for environmental sociology look like? How does the discipline grapple with global issues while remaining sensitive to the myriad ways in which people experience environmental change? This session welcomes papers on new directions in environmental sociology. This may include new theoretical approaches, innovative methodological approaches, and/or research on emerging issues.
