Leisure, often perceived as a time for relaxation and personal fulfilment, becomes a focal point for social justice when examined from a gendered perspective. Globally, women encounter unequal access to leisure compared to men. The uneven distribution of household responsibilities, particularly childcare and homemaking, results in significantly less leisure time for women, especially in developing nations. Cultural norms and constraints restrict women's mobility and leisure choices in certain societies. Economic factors such as the gender pay gap can render leisure activities financially unattainable, particularly when factoring in childcare expenses.
Equal access for all genders is essential to promote social justice in leisure. Leisure is a fundamental right, and both men and women deserve opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and social connections through leisure activities. It is vital to challenge traditional gender roles in leisure pursuits. Social awareness campaigns can dismantle traditional norms that impede women's leisure choices. Ultimately, empowering women economically and nurturing their self-determination enables them to choose and partake in leisure activities freely. We can only establish a global environment where leisure becomes an inclusive space for everyone by addressing these inequalities.
This session invites scholars to write abstracts and research papers on women with unequal leisure opportunities compared to men, providing further insights into the gender-leisure nexus vis-a-vis social justice with suitable theoretical orientation.
