Palestinian Childhoods – Growing up in Contexts of Violence and Exclusion

Wednesday, 9 July 2025: 15:00-16:45
Location: FSE014 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
WG11 Violence and Society (host committee)

Language: English

The aim of this session is to shed light on childhood and adolescence in a prolonged violent conflict, under conditions of harsh occupation and disenfranchisement and in bloody conflicts and genocidal wars. Some key questions may include: What are children's own injuries and traumatic experiences, what are the intergenerationally transmitted ones, in what way does this damage growing up, how do the children and young people deal with these experiences, how do they process the suffering, what/who helps them, what additionally burdens them (e.g. how do educational institutions consider the situation, are they helpful or not), how do children and young people gain political awareness? What are forms of violent and nonviolent resistance of young people? What are the differences if Palestinian children grow up in Israel, Gaza, Westbank, neighbor countries, further abroad and what are the common experiences?
