New Ageing Populations

Friday, 11 July 2025: 11:00-12:45
Location: FSE037 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
RC11 Sociology of Aging (host committee)

Language: English

Old age is being redefined as more people age with conditions that would previously have led to early death. New treatments and the improvements of established ones contributed to survival rates in people with various diseases such as cystic fibrosis, HIV/AIDS and others. As an extension to the emerging interest in bridges between ageing and disability studies, we invite scholars to present their theoretical and empirical work on various aspects of the new ageing populations. This session is also looking to provide a space for even broader discussions on how the very concept of new ageing populations may be useful for future inquiries, and how we may extend our "non-traditional" understanding of ageing as a social phenomenon.
