Transition within societies open up new possibilities for identity construction, integration and differentiation. Dislocation brought about by change raise questions about solidarity and community. From a social psychological perspective, temporal, spatial and cultural contexts of lived experience highlight a sense of belonging, a politics of recognition and raise questions about social justice. Claims to entitlements underpinned by either past legacies of inclusion or exclusion shape the allocation and distribution of resources. This session invites papers that reflect on how race as a social and historical construct is used to either protect privilege, or call for redress and social justice in contemporary societies.
