Monday, 7 July 2025: 13:00-14:45
Location: SJES021 (Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences (JES))
RC14 Sociology of Communication, Knowledge and Culture (host committee)

Language: English

This session invites social researchers to submit papers on the cultural dynamics and behavioral patterns from South Korea and its great popularity and social influence around the world.

The young generation in South Korea faces multifaceted challenges such as intense academic pressure, a highly competitive job market, high suicide rates, and generational conflicts. These factors expose young South Koreans to intense distress and life challenges.

Meanwhile, young South Koreans are highly tech-savvy, with lives largely immersed in Korean popular culture (e.g., K-pop, K-dramas, and social media content). They are referred to as the "MZ generation" (Millennials and Gen Z), whose values and lifestyles largely diverge from those of older generations.

We welcome any topics related to the multifaceted cultural landscape of the young generation in South Korea. Topics can include, but are not limited to:

  • How technology has influenced youth culture
  • The cultural processes shifting youth perspectives on social issues (e.g., diversity, inequality, environmental concerns)
  • Generational divides in attitudes, values, and behaviors
  • Cultural practices of Korean youth in forging their identities
  • How the Korean young generation negotiates between traditional values (e.g., Confucianism and collectivism) and so-called Western cultural influences (e.g., individualism)

This session will offer valuable insights for scholars interested in cultural processes that shape and reshape the lives of Korean youth in contemporary South Korean society. We encourage submissions on any related topics.
