Comparative and Historical Sociology of Women’s Careers: In the Midst of Great Changes

A number of papers were submitted to the joint session “Comparative and Historical Sociology of Women’s Careers” in ISA World Congress 2018 in Toronto which led to a special issue on Comparative Sociology. After that, however, there occurred great changes that happen once every few decades, or are unprecedented for humankind (e.g., large-scale infectious diseases, rapid spread of the means of teleconferencing, a war involving many major powers, beginning of diversity campaigns in public domains.) So far, these changes have had a tremendous impact on women's lives. In some cases, they have triggered international, interregional, or domestic immigration. In others, women have been suffering from serious damage from the war or, on the contrary, actively participated in it. Furthermore, there are dramatic changes in roles, spatial positions, and support systems within communities, workplaces, and schools. This session intends to reconsider the same topic focusing on multiple case studies, and in both historical and comparative studies, which will provide a description and explanation of the phenomena. It will also provide suggestions for policies aimed at improving this grimmer situation than 6 years ago. It welcomes papers concentrating on this subject, regardless of background or conclusions.
