Location: FSE021 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
WG01 Sociology of Local-Global Relations (host committee)

Language: English

The ideas of the social contract were developed by T. Hobbes, J. Locke and other thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment. They interpreted its content as the ultimate expression of open and latent forms of agreement on interaction and mutual support between the people and the government represented by political power.

At present, the social contract idea has become popular due to the need to reveal its essential foundations, as well as to update the meaning and mechanism of interaction between the people and the government, taking into account the new challenges of the global world. For a sociological analysis of the contemporary interpretation of the social contract, it is important to consider the correlation between the basic motivations, value systems and interests of people and the government policy, and to identify the grounds for the agreement between them. The combination of these phenomena makes it possible to study the essence of the social contract that is the social contract between the government and the people in all its diversity and in many aspects.

The evolution of ideas, as well as social practices inherent in different peoples at different times show the specifics of a social contract in different historic periods. We hope to attract participants with materials that will allow comparisons to be made. Comparing the ideas of the social contract and practices existing in different countries allows us to take into account the local experience for updating the concept of the social contract in the modern globalizing world.
