Family research is both a broad and vibrant field of study. This session will engage in reflection on the field as a whole with a view to the future and to identifying innovations and promising lines of development in particular topics and research themes. It is oriented to exploring future directions but also wants to acknowledge the historical background and trajectories of different approaches and methodologies. The session invites papers that draw attention to recent developments, including new methods, new data sources or types. Papers of a theoretical and conceptual nature are especially welcome. A guiding set of questions for the session includes: What does the future of family studies look like? Where are the innovations? How do we ensure that family research keeps up with major changes in society including those associated with the challenges of justice in the Anthropocene?
