This roundtable will discuss the implications of the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza on grassroots movements and academic freedom. It asks how the international solidarity with Palestinians has put many students and faculty at risk of being expelled, facing publishing bans and receiving direct threats. Moreover, the speakers will discuss the implications of the ongoing Gaza genocide on how the interplay of local and global dynamics shapes social movements. Leaning into a politics of solidarity, this session will build critical conversations on (but not limited to): changes in the framing of local social movements, their networks, education and membership; the impact of the global protests on the local social movements; the increased support of imperial powers for Israel and the global wildfire of campus encampments and its connections to student movements and organizing.
