Racial and ethnic disparities in educational opportunities, socioeconomic inequalities, and social mobility patterns are widespread in many nations. Although race and ethnicity are social constructions that vary across countries and time, they are invariably important ascriptive markers of social stratification. Nevertheless, measuring race and ethnicity is challenging for social scientists. Therefore, we propose to discuss measurement and social indicators related to this type of ascriptive stratification and research investigating the diverse types of social stratification and related mobility patterns. Studies on racial and ethnic disparities in income, class, social status, education, wealth, health, and many other outcomes would be welcome to this group.
