Reshaping Global Sociology to Focus on the Global Majority

Thursday, 10 July 2025: 09:00-10:45
Location: FSE021 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
WG01 Sociology of Local-Global Relations (host committee)

Language: English, French and Spanish

Both mainstream Sociological thought and various forms of critical theory tend to have their center of gravity in the Global North. In terms of the central theorists, the literature cited, the problems asked, the data collected, the research agendas formulated, their focus and their locus of enunciation lies in the Global North. This means that there is a large discrepancy between the lived experiences and structural situatedness of the Global Majority and the center of gravity of Sociological theory, with Sociological theory focusing on mapping the lived reality of the globally comparatively privileged populations. How can Sociology shift towards faithfully and accurately theorizing the realities of the Global Majority? Which power structures and practices in the political economy of knowledge production would need to be dismantled or re-shaped, which codes of conduct and best practices would need to be formulated, in order to achieve this goal? This session welcomes presentations that seek to answer these questions or study related topics in a broader sense. Submissions are welcome that seek to theorize the Social based on the experiences of the Global Majority.
