Monday, 7 July 2025: 15:00-16:45
Location: FSE030 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
RC15 Sociology of Health (host committee) Language: English
The language of choice permeates contemporary health, medicine and healthcare. ‘Choice’ implies individual control over the exercise of options and self-responsibility for decisions. But what does ‘choice’ mean in healthcare systems confronting constraints of many kinds: epistemological, financial, sociocultural, political, and technical? This session will explore how the logic and language of choice manifests in and shapes views on and practices regarding health, medicine and healthcare, whether these be at the personal, institutional or societal level. Papers will discuss the dynamics of ‘choice’ in relation to issues such as views on responsibility for health and care, on access to certain roles in healthcare, and on the financing of treatment and care.
