Tuesday, 8 July 2025: 13:00-14:45
Location: FSE030 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
RC15 Sociology of Health (host committee)

Language: English

Sociologists have developed a diverse repertoire of methodological approaches, both
qualitative and quantitative, to understand issues of health, medicine and care. They
include (auto-)ethnographies, participatory action research, surveys, diary-based
interviews, digital methods, archival research, bibliographic reviews, discourse
analysis, and actor network analysis, among others. These approaches reflect different
conceptions of society, both casting light on otherwise hidden features of the social
order and creating ‘blind spots’ through inattention to certain phenomena. This session
will present some of the many and varied approaches that sociologists currently are
employing in their work, drawing attention to their value, limitations and implications.
