The paper is concerned with the history of the Research Committee on Sociology of Science of the International Sociological Association (RC23, ISA). The author presents a detailed study that based on the analysis of the academic activity of board members and first president Robert K. Merton. The history of the Research Committee is very rich by scientific events and important contributions. The study has been primary focused on the scrutiny of the RC23's correspondence, programs of events, meetings reports, publications from the archive of the International Sociological Association. For those who have worked in the area for decades, it is an interesting trip down memory lane. For those who are new to the sociology of science and technology, the appreciation will be strengthened through an awareness of the way that RC23 has contributed to the development of the field.
