The essence of the story is that Max Weber's ideal types concerning traditional authority have been largely ignored in sociological theory and comparatiive historical sociology, even by Weberians and Neo-Weberians. Thankfully, the translators of Thomas Piketty has recently re-activated the use of the term patrimonialism in the English-speaking world (Bakker forthcoming). I have been working on patrimonialism since my Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Toronto (1979). Bakker, J. I. (Hans) 2006, "Patrirnonialism." Pp, 668-670 in Bevire, Mark (ed.)
