Civil Sphere Theory Outside the North

Tuesday, 17 July 2018: 15:30-17:20
Location: 701A (MTCC SOUTH BUILDING)

RC16 Sociological Theory (host committee)

Language: English

Invited Session

Civil sphere theory (CST) has been presented as a general sociological theory of democracy, its cultural codes, institutional structures, debilitating contradictions, and conditions for civil repair. Empirical applications of  CST, however, have been mostly confined to the global north. Wide-ranging efforts to rectify this parochialism are currently underway. This session will highlight studies that apply, develop, and revise CST in relation to Latin America and East Asia.
