RC17 Sociology of Organization (host committee)
RC52 Sociology of Professional Groups

Professions are increasingly linked with enterprise at a number of interrelated levels. This session seeks to explore these connections. In particular, we invite papers which consider the relationship of professions with the enterpreneurial contexts in which they operate. Indicative questions include but are not limited to: Are professions becoming more entrepreneurial in a knowledge economy placing ever greater importance on the creation, diffusion and transfer of knowledge? What are the implications of working in enterprise contexts for the culture, practices and identities of the professions? What are the tensions between professionalism and enterprise in organisations and how are these resolved? What role in particular is played by professional service firms? What is the impact in terms of hybridisation of professional work and how is this managed?
