Social Inclusion of Persons With Mental Illness
Mental illness frequently leads to social exclusion because of social stigma associated with
mental illness and psychiatric therapies that limit personal development. Individuals with
mental illness require social support which nurtures their personal development. The
most effective social support encourages activities that fulfill socially valued goals
and produce individual empowerment. Ultimately,to the extent possible, persons with
mental illness should be supported in their efforts to live an economically autonomous
life performing recognized and socially valued work. This session invites studies of
social inclusion using various theoretical approaches and methodologies
