Language: English

Session Type: Oral

With a focus on how larger ruling relations coordinate the everyday world of individuals, institutional ethnography is an approach that can shed light on the experiences characterized as “migration” or “immigration” in important ways. This way, migrants experience their daily life and the complex social relations in which these are embedded. Institutional ethnography offers the possibility to understand the differential effect of institutions within and beyond institutional spaces. Migrants in the host country become a part of institutional changes and orient their lives to the host societies while maintaining ties with their home countries. This session brings together scholarship that explicates various aspects of migration, including dynamics that are made invisible in standard accountings of migration and immigration.
