Planetary urbanization and its associated critique of "methodological city-ism" have helped to dismantle unproductive rural/urban binaries by helping reveal processes of capitalist urbanization underway across the urbanization continuum (from spaces of concentrated to extended urbanization). But while this perspective led to important insights about the spatial, economic, and ecological implications of planetary urbanization, less attention has been paid to how claims get made and with what effects along the urbanization continuum. This paper session centers questions of claims-making, political subjectivities, governing institutions, and resistance strategies that aim to reveal how critical urban scholars are thinking about urban political contestations beyond the urban/rural binary.
