This panel addresses the intersection of violence (e.g. interpersonal, state-led, IGO/INGO-led), gender, and migration status experienced by migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced people. These forms of violence may materialize in different ways such as sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and forced sterilization, among many others. Further, these forms of violence may take place in detention centers, refugee camps, securitized borders, areas where the international right for asylum has been suspended, the migratory trajectory, and even in their country of origin when women and girls are forced to leave their countries of origin due to different forms of violence. In all these cases, women’s bodies are objectified in such a way that makes them available for consumption or disposal. This panel invites papers that provide theoretical frameworks and empirical cases that address the intersection of violence, gender, and immigration status from a global perspective. Overall, we envision this panel to offer a theoretical and/or empirical comparative approach that fosters a conversation about experiences in different countries of origin, transit, and destination, and the circulation between them.
