The roles and impacts of non-state actors such as local governments, NGOs, youth groups, media, businesses, and research institutions are widely estimated as critical for climate change mitigation. They play a key role in shaping the nature of international treaties like the 2015 Paris Agreement and the 2021 Glasgow Climate Pact and driving action at the global, national, and local levels. Climate issues should be tackled in terms of climate justice, just transition, energy democracy, policy networks, civic engagement, and consensus building. In this session, case studies and sociological analyses on policies, actors, and collaborations from the local, national, regional, and global levels will be discussed. By addressing the question, how have non-state actors promoted a just transition? This session will analyze how civil societies, NGOs, and big businesses can collaborate to drive climate policy toward a sustainable future.
