RC35 Conceptual and Terminological Analysis (host committee)
Language: English
Session Type: Oral
The perspectives which have constituted sociology represented positions of power. They were male, heterosexual, white, bourgois, Western. But the discipline's mainstream has long been challenged. Voices traditionally considered as peripheral have begun to transform the canon. Increasingly, the canon includes proletarian and feminist contributions, queer approaches, analyses by POC and from the Global South. RC35 has held numerous sessions on the experiences of the marginalized majority of humanity. Reflecting on these attempts, the session invites submissions on this 'peripheral turn' in sociology and in particular on how to move beyond calls for a mere expansion of the mainstream and towards a reconstituted sociology not distorted by power asymmetries.
