WG08 Society and Emotions (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Oral

Our sophistication in interpreting images lags greatly behind our ability to interpret texts. Among others, Sara Ahmed contributed greatly to showing how discourse analysis and analysis of emotions can go hand in hand. This Session is meant as yet another step towards increasing image-literacy, especially concerning emotions. In her two books on photography and on distant suffering Susan Sontag did much to make us aware of the emotional regimes associated with images - especially those pertaining to (civil) wars and distant suffering caused by nature-made or man-made catastrophes. Many different sociologists such as, for example, Juan A. Roche Cárcel, a cultural sociologist, and Nicole Doerr, a social movement scholar, also can be mentioned among the important contributors to this area of study. This Session welcomes presentations on the emotions associated with images. Presentations offering deep analysis of a single image are as welcome as much as those focused on shorter or longer videos or films. Of particular interest are analyses of the images seeking to convey emotions associated with the Zeitgeist, particular settings, diverse campaigns (for example: "be happy", "anti-depression", "non-smoking", "anti-AIDS", anti/pro-abortion, anti/pro-nuclear power, anti/pro-migrant, anti/proLGBTQ), various ideologies, protests, (civil) wars, commemoration politics, borders, and nearby and distant suffering.
