Social Violence and Urban Studies

The so-called commercial enclaves in the cities are linked to the function of capitalist consumption and have favored the emergence of middle and high income consumers, where social exclusion is based on a video surveillance control system, whose main task has been to protect clients of individuals classified as a risk for the logic of social exclusion in a fragmented space. On the other hand, social enclaves represent a distribution model of urban space, in which closed housing complexes are separated by walls, bars and security technologies, or become symbolic spaces separated from the rest, both in cases of rich population agglomerations as in the cases of the ghettos of poor population or pertaining to diverse ethnic groups.

This type of violence is a social fact that can be analyzed as a process linked to the crisis of solidarity that, from a general point of view, was caused by the weakening of state welfare and security institutions, which places the market as the main protagonist, whose logic has been imposed and justified by neoliberal ideology.

The purpose of the table is to discuss the social meanings of the various types of violence in the reorganization of public space in segregated cities. The meeting seeks a comparison between cities in emerging and developed countries, on the way in which such exclusive and excludable public spaces work, which configure fragmented or segregated territories.
