Session Type: Oral

This session aims to discuss recent trends in women’s employment across the globe. In many countries, including the most populated ones, large numbers of women are not actively participating in the labor market. At the same time, we are witnessing a global decline in fertility rates and an increase in the level of higher education among women. How do we explain this phenomenon of low labor market participation in the 21st century when countries are competing for the top ranking of the Human Development and Gender Inequality Indexes? What are the main predictors and how do economic, social, and cultural components help us understand this phenomenon? The session will promote comparative international discussion of women's empowerment in different parts of the world. The submissions are encouraged to use cross-national empirical data to examine gender equality and women's employment differences across different countries and regions.
