RC16 Sociological Theory (host committee)

Language: English and French

Session Type: Oral

The session examines the relations between Figuration and Configuration inside cultural sociology (Simmel, Elias). It will explore the relationships between configuration and codes, especially during and after the Covid pandemic.

In this framework can be developed the modality of meaning between configuration and subjectivation supporting the facets of existential continuity (Merleau Ponty, Giddens), such as social vulnerability, environmental vulnerability, cultural affirmation. Papers are therefore invited that consider the following questions:

1/ How can we enlighten the sustainability issues of cultural life facing vulnerability (Morin, R Castel). Likewise, how can new codes be enlarged between existential sustainability, health sustainability, environmental sustainability ?

2/ Can we consider the configuration of sustainability as a purposive response to the configuration of vulnerabilities (Beck, Latour)? Which code and performance can be specified in this period?

3/ Which dialogic can be enhanced between singular vulnerability (body and self, personal suffering) and universal vulnerabilities ( systemic risk, mandatory confinement)? It must be possible to specify the new types of intellectuals relating vulnerabilities within an historical and cultural processuality (Reed). Different processualities can be envisioned between these categories of vulnerabilities, such as biographical and environmental trajectories. Further, which modes of social power are sustained inside the Covid crisis between material bases (health logistic) and cultural reception (depression, impulsivity )?
