Demographic change is ubiquitous, even in so-called post-transitional societies: Mortality continues to decline, though there also reversals; nuptiality and couple formation expand and contract; fertility oscillates; and, with increasing globalization, both voluntary and forced migration expands. These changes can certainly be related to other social variations and patterns of behaviour. Demographic change has always been, and continues to be, a part of social change but we need greater understanding of how demographic change is related to more macro-social changes. The session will explore current demographic changes and their relation to social structures and changes.
