The war in Ukraine has brought home how international local conflicts can be. Daily life is disrupted, hundreds of thousands of refugees spread across the globe, food chains are disrupted and production lines diverted to armaments. However, while Ukraine has hit the headlines, because of location and who the contestants are, this is not the only active conflict: Africa is replete with conflicts (Ethiopia, Darfur, Congo to name just three) and there are simmering conflicts in other parts of the world as well. This session will focus on the immediate demographic effects of war: not only mortality and migration but also fertility and social structure: are all groups equally affected or do some suffer more than others?
