This joint session with RC 30 (work) and RC 31 (migration) invites papers that explore the experiences of migrant women in employment and work. Particular focus is given to issues related to the ISA Congress theme, including migrant women’s experiences at work of generalized authoritarianism, xenophobic and racist acts and job insecurity and precariousness, particularly affecting ethnicized-racialized immigrant women (Nakano Glenn, 2009). We are interested in papers that feature the methodological and conceptual developments needed to examine the intersectionalities and cross-cutting dimensions of migrant women and the kinds of work they are involved in, including subsistence, formal and informal. We welcome papers that present empirical data exploring the various strategies and tactics implemented by migrant women to circumvent the barriers and constraints of access to the labor market they encounter, including the extent to which these strategies are examples of (micro)resistances of migrant women in response to processes of authoritarianism and gendered and racialized identities in the subaltern niches of the labor market.
