Social Movements, State and Civil Society: Perspectives from the Global South

Abstract

Social movements are one of the major forms of collective behaviour. In the last six decades, social movement studies have attracted the attention of a large number of sociologists, political scientists, and social anthropologists in the global south. The question is that why do people join the various types of social movements? It shows that something is wrong with some people. Yes, it is true that when something goes wrong with society or some section of the communities, people try to change it through collective protest.

The state and its machinery have failed to deliver their promises, resulting in a strong disenchantment with the system. The policy of development followed by the state resulted in development for the few and impoverishment for many. The state’s developments have led to the annihilation of people through displacement and livelihood and tampering with their culture.

It has a primary focus on the Global South, given that it will examine different kinds of social movements in the Global South. Through case studies, diverse problematics related to social justice and environmentally and socially sustainable development in the Global South will be explored and discussed and how the civil society actors in these countries have sought to address these challenges through collective action.

Keywords: Social Movement, Development, Livelihood, Global South.
