The relationship between the state and development is one of the oldest questions in economic sociology. Substantial positive and negative effects have been documented. The state is not independent of norms of cooperation and exchange, reflexive self-consideration of its propoer role, and having to broker the relationship between local society, transnational organizations and other sometimes hostile governments. This session presents new research on these complex relationships.
